REFLECTION

untitled2312,found crochet & found
jewellery. 2011

I found some time over the past two weeks to create a response to Julie for our Collisions Project. I saw my Mum for the last time the day before she died and I wanted to creat comfort, security, momento, longing, sadness and decoration. Taking the extremely personal into the public domain through juxtaposition of materials. I think? I may have succeeded?

random series #3

I have always been interested in the sparse interior. The placement of objects and images can be quite inspiring. This is the petrol station cafe in Broke NSW. Love the way the horns are displayed.

influences project #2

along with my passion for song lyrics, I still sit and watch Rage most Saturday mornings and know that I could make much better video clips. Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart, along with Ultavox's clip for Vienna have been influential in my image making.
I have been a fan of Felix Gonzalea-Torres for many years. Along with his candy piles, his series of curtains are overwhelmingly passionate and emotional.

The NSW town of Maitland experienced the worst ever flood in 1955. This image is from the train station and is placed approx two metres from the ground.

influences project #1

another series I wish to continue here. So many people ask me.."what influences your work?".
The first response is always..The song lyrics of Crowded House!

"well there's a slow boat made in china, going nowhere on the mantlepiece"

the image shows a hongi, the traditional Maori welcome

dumb design diva

Mama is a queen and Papa is a king So I am a princess (and) I know it
But court etiquette is a dull dreary thing I just hate it all and I show it
To sing on the stage that's the one life for me My figure's just like Tetrazzini
I know I'd win fame if I sang in Bohéme That opera by Signor Puccini
I’ve roulades and the trills That would send the cold chills
Down the backs of all hearers of my vocal frills
Aah-aah-aah-aah-aah-aah-aah-aah-aah-aaaaahhhhhh
I long to be a prima donna, donna, donna I long to shine upon the stage
I have the embonpoint To become a queen of song
And my figure would look pretty as a page I want to be a screechy peachy cantatrice
Like other plump girls that I see I hate society
I hate propriety Art is calling for me
I'm in the elite and men sigh at my feet Still I do not fancy my position
I have not much use for the men that I meet I quite burn with lyric ambition
Those tenors so sweet If they made love to me I'd be a success, that I do know
And Melba I’d oust if I once sang in Faust That opera so charming by Gounod
Girls would be on the brink Of hysterics, I think
Even strong men would have to go out for a drink
I long to be a prima donna, donna, donna
I long to shine upon the stage With my avoirdupois And my tra la la la la
I would be the chief sensation of the age I long to hear them shouting: "Viva" to the Diva
Oh, very lovely that must be That's what I'm dying for That's what I'm sighing for
Art is calling for me

creative alternatives

it has been one year since I was forced to make a decision. Having been totally in love with Melbourne for 20 years, I really needed the kick in the arse from someone I love. Yes, gorgeous times are now available to be ultra creative and a total Garden Meister, I have the past five years to both reflect on....and learn.

Collision: November 2011

hair, gold locket, restrung pearls, security locks

this peice is my latest response to the Collisions Project I have been working on with my great friend Julie Clarke. We respond to each other's artworks, mostly to do with family, gender, history & facade. Julie logs everything about the Project on her blog:

anythingbuthuman.blogspot.com

We have been responding to each others work for almost twelve months and it continues to be even more exciting as I await the postman.

a subtle spatial invasion

'footprint object'
found objects, tree branches, acrylic paint

in my quest to make the ugly sublime, I am shopping the local op shops almost daily. I have a obsession with cheap and tacky asian souvenirs. This piece is two foot ashtrays and I have added branches to the base. Finished with about ten layers of paint in a very subtle pink. I personally love the piece.

trouble set me free

I was invited to exhibit in a show at VCA Gallery Melbourne in 2010. The title of the show was 'Trouble Set Me Free', curated by Catherine Bell and the curatorial premise was "how artists deal with trauma. I referred back to the accident and brain rehab. One morning in rehab I awoke to find a spot of blood on my pillowcase. I asked the nurse if I could take it. He was puzzled but allowed me to have it. It is a standard pillow case. The blood spot is almost bottom central. The markings on the top right are hand embroidered. James traced the scars on my head and I transferred the lines. A truly gorgeous collaboration with JB.

A visit to the op shop in Churchill in 2004 as I biked to my office. My colleague Kelly wanted to know what I was going to do with the pink baby jumper I had purchased ($1). I jokingly replied that it was my party mask. Isn't it amazing that silly things become tragically beautiful?
